Explore White Island, a volcano estimated at be as old as 200,000 years and named by Captain James Cook. White Island, a privately owned island, was declared a scenic reserve in 1953. Permits were required in 1995 and, as of 1997, there are only four tour operators allowed to operate tours to it. This incredible island is a wildly popular tourist activity although, by going on a tour in the winter, you will enjoy exploring the island with significantly fewer people than might otherwise be the case. Where else can you walk around on an active volcano? Tours are dependant on the weather and seismic conditions so plan on spending a few days at the jumping off point so that you are not disappointed.

Take some time to visit Whakarewarewa Forest, just few minutes from Rotorua’s downtown. Originally started as a nursery for non-native, exotic trees in 1899, this park is 2,280 hectares. A stand of redwoods planted in 1901 was later dedicated to honor New Zealand Forest Service staff that perished in both World Wars. Embracing the use of mountain bikes, Whakarewarewa Forest offers mountain bikers tracks for them to ride on unimpeded by hikers and runners. Several bike trails wind through the redwoods allowing bikers, hikers and runners to enjoy the forest in their own way.

Take a step into the past with a visit to Skippers Canyon and ride the famous Shotover River. New Zealand’s gold rush sites are visited and the history of 130 years of gold mining are on display at Winky’s Gold Mining Museum. Although the cost might seem steep, this area is not easily accessible and offers a rich, unique experience that you might otherwise never have.

From whale and bird watching, to exploring a live volcano, from kayaking along the gorgeous coastline to exploring New Zealand’s beautiful cities; it is always more enjoyable to have the experience without crush of other tourists around you.
